DAV College authorities put cricket offline from PU inter-college tournament

The impossible has happened. For decades the powerhouse of cricket, the place where the likes of Kapil Dev, Yuvraj Singh, Ashok Malhotra, Dinesh Mongia and Yograj Singh grew up and fine tuned their cricket, the DAV College-10 has decided to shut the cricket shop and withdraw their team from participating in the Panjab University Inter-College cricket competition this year.

The decision will not only disappoint the cricket lovers, it will also leave the upcoming cricketers of the college in a lurch. Without participation in inter-college, these players cannot be considered for the Inter-University competitions.

According to sources, the DAV authorities arrived at this decision following DAV Management Committee's decision to grant limited budget to the college for sports, which will affect lot of games including cricket as it is a team game.

Reacting to this announcement, a cricketer, on the condition of anonymity said, "Cricketers seek admission in DAV College due to the fact that this college is considered to be a cricket nursery. We cannot imagine cricket being scrapped from the annual inter-college competition. If our team does not take part in the inter-college, we are not eligible to appear for Panjab University cricket team. It is utter anarchy. Our careers will be affected. Moreover, emotions are attached to PU inter-college."

Another player said, "The issue is very big. We can't just sit back and listen to the authorities like this. I cannot be wasting one year without taking part in the PU inter-college or inter-university tournament. We will come together and raise our voice against the decision and request the college authorities to roll back their decision. Cricket comes naturally to the college. It is our pride."

The college Principal, BC Josan was unavailable for his comments.

After this decision, the college cricketers including the college student leaders and local cricketers will stage a strike at the college gate on Tuesday morning showing their anger over the decision.

DAV College finished dismal fourth in the last PU inter-college tournament. It is quite visible that DAV College which used to dominate in cricket has been quite wayward in the last few years. Not only cricket, their entire sports graph has been going down as after winning the prestigious Shadi Lal Trophy for consecutive 37th time, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College-26 outplayed the DAV College this year.
