Shoaib must prove fitness to reclaim spot in team: Sarfraz

Islamabad, July 1 (ANI): Former Pakistan fast bowler Sarfraz Nawaz has said Shoaib Akhtar must prove his hundred percent fitness if he wants to secure a berth in the national team.

Nawaz said if Akhtar proved his fitness, he would definitely be included in the squad.

With Umar Gul and rookie pace sensation Mohammad Aamir hogging the limelight during the ICC World Twenty20 Championship, Pakistan hardly felt the absence of the 'Rawalpindi Express' during the tournament, and with Sohail Tanvir also pushing hard for a place in the team, Akhtar's chances of making it to the national squad look bleak.

Akhtar missed the T20 World Championship due to a skin ailment, and was not considered for the Sri Lanka series, even after his claims of recovering completely.

Nawaz also asked the PCB to decide on the future of fast bowler Mohammad Asif soon.

"They should take the decision about Mohammad Asif. He has been stranded,"The News quoted Nawaz, as saying.

Ponting is a crap captain, says ex-Oz pacer Thomson

Melbourne, July 1 (ANI): Former Australian fast bowler Jeff Thomson has described current Australian cricket skipper Ricky Ponting as a "crap captain".

Thomson is of the view that Ponting should never have been given the Australian captaincy five years ago and believes England has the advantage going into this year's Ashes series.

Thomson, who snared 200 Test wickets, also believes the inclusion of spinner Nathan Hauritz in Australia's Ashes squad further highlights those deficiencies.

The Sun quoted Thommo, as saying: "I thought Ricky was c**p when he was first captain in 2004 and nothing much has improved since then. I'm not the only one who thinks that. I've always bagged him and everyone at home thinks he's s**t at the captaincy. He's a great player but captaincy is a totally different thing."

"He was in a side that had very good players and now he's got a side that has average players. He's still left wanting. You see it on him - he gets frustrated. He worries when the players don't do what he's used to with the ball when he passes it to them," he added.

"The choices he makes, his field settings and the things he does are never right. England has the edge in the captaincy department. But while England have a better captain, Australia have a better line-up," he said. (ANI)

ICC chief Morgan hints at 4-day tests

The International Cricket Council is considering cutting tests from five days to four.

ICC president David Morgan says the sport's governing body is considering the change to boost interest in cricket's traditional format, which is dropping in popularity relative to one-day games and particularly the recently introduced Twenty20 game.

"We are examining is whether test match cricket can be played over four days rather than five," Morgan said in an interview to India Today magazine.

"The board of the ICC is determined to ensure that test match cricket is seen as the pinnacle of our great game.

"I would be very surprised if within a year you haven't seen some significant changes in test match cricket."

Morgan said tests also needed better over rates, plus better pitches that provide an even contest between batsmen and bowlers. The ICC is also pushing ahead with plans toward introducing day-night tests.

"The issue is the color of the ball and the quality of the ball," he said. "It would be a pity if day-night test match cricket had to be played with a white ball and, therefore, colored clothing."

While a traditional red ball can not be used at night, the ICC is hoping to develop a ball in a bright color like orange.

Cricket Australia (CA) spokesman Peter Young said chief executive James Sutherland was not keen on four-day tests.

"James is more in favor of night test cricket and we are in discussions on the color of the ball and whether it would affect the dimensions of the ball," Young said.

David Gilbert, chief cricket administrator in New South Wales state, said four-day tests would hurt venues and hosts while aiding telecasters.

"If there was a determination by the ICC to change it to four days, it wouldn't have a major impact on our bottom line," Gilbert was quoted to say by Australian Associated Press.

"I would imagine the broadcaster was very much to the fore with the suggestion.

"It would be sad to see it happen because a five-day game of test cricket, it really sorts the men out from the boys."

Bowled by three-year-old son, Vaughan decided he had to quit cricket!

London, July 1 (ANI): Former England captain Michael Vaughan said that he was convinced that it was time to quit cricket when his three-year-old son, Archie, uprooted his off-stump during a backyard match.

"Two weeks ago, my little lad Archie bowled a ball that hit a weed and knocked my off stump out of the ground. If a three-year-old is bowling me out, it's time to move over," The Sun quoted Vaughan, as saying.

The incident made him realize that he had no chance of playing for England again, and the daily grind of county cricket had little appeal for him.

"I always say that senior players have to be the most enthusiastic and I was starting to feel in the Yorkshire dressing room that I wasn't passing on that enthusiasm to the younger players," Vaughan said.

"I knew I had to move over and give those younger players the opportunity I had when I was 19 and 20. I'd like to be remembered as someone that gave his all and was, hopefully, a nice player to watch," The Sun quoted him, as adding. (ANI)

Torres predicts "Big Four" will turn to "Big Five" in next year's Premier League

London, July 1 (ANI): English football giant Liverpool's striker Fernando Torres has predicted that Manchester City would join the Premier League title race next season to make it the "Big Five", with Liverpool, champions Manchester United, FA Cup winners Chelsea and Arsenal.

The striker believes that the big-spenders -Manchester City- are putting a strong team together to be one of the title contenders next season.

"City are putting together a strong team with good signings," the Daily Express quoted Torres, as saying.

He conceded that Liverpool doesn't have the kind of funds that City, Arsenal or Man U have, but believed that the Reds will be tough competition for the teams.

"I'm sure United and Chelsea will be our main rivals, but you can't leave Arsenal or Manchester City out of the equation," Torres said.

"United have yet to sign players with the money they received from the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo, but he will be sorely missed along with Carlos Tevez. We will have to wait and see which players they bring in," he added.

Torres also showcased strong confidence on his team and believed that Liverpool would use advanced tactics next season in view of the Premier League.

"The Premier League is Liverpool's main goal for next season. We are going to set our sights on the title, and this time we are going to try to be more clinical at home against the so-called weaker teams," he said. (ANI)

Pakistan board satisfied with Sri Lanka security cover

Karachi, July 1 (IANS) The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has given the green signal to the security arrangements being made for the safety of its cricketers in Sri Lanka.

Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, said Wednesday that he was personally satisfied with the security cover being offered to the national team which begins its 45-day tour of Sri Lanka June 29.

Butt said he has also received a positive report from the team manager about the security arrangements being made by the Sri Lankans to ensure that the Pakistani players are safe in their country.

Butt said he will personally review the security arrangements when he visits Sri Lanka from July 3 to see the opening Test starting at Galle from July 4.

Pakistan will play three Tests, five One-day Internationals and a Twenty20 game during the tour.

Sri Lankan authorities have stepped up security for the Pakistan team and slapped new restrictions at match venues.

According to officials, fireworks, musical bands, glass bottles, tin cans, sharp objects, laser pointers and mirrors have all been banned from the grounds where the matches are scheduled to be played.

The series comes about a month after the Sri Lanka army ended a bloody, four-decade ethnic war against Tamil Tiger rebels in the island country. Pakistan's three-day practice match against a Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo that ends Wednesday saw hundreds of police commandos sealing off the ground while spectators were thoroughly frisked.

According to the Pakistan team management, the security measures are very tight but the players are not complaining about it.

Pakistan minister blames PCB for losing World Cup rights

Karachi, July 1 (IANS) Pakistan's Sports Minister Pir Aftab Shah Jilani blamed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for losing the 2011 World Cup hosting rights.

After a meeting with Pakistan Sports Board in Islamabad, Jilani told reporters that 'those steering Pakistan cricket were responsible for failure to bring the World Cup 2011 matches back to the country.'

'It is the responsibility of those now sitting in the driving seat of Pakistan cricket to bring back World Cup matches to our country', he said.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently rejected efforts and lobbying by PCB officials to restore the 14 World Cup matches originally allotted to Pakistan. The World Cup was originally to be hosted jointly by Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

But the ICC's Cricket Committee decided to strip Pakistan of its hosting rights due to security problems in the strife-torn country. The PCB is currently fighting a legal battle with the ICC to get back its hosting rights.

Buzz Up Strauss to Freddie: Know when to booze and when to fire

London, July 1: England cricket captain Andrew Strauss has said that he has no problem with all-rounder Andrew Flintoff boozing, as long as he knows that he is required to be fit to fire at his opponents on the cricket field.

Strauss was speaking after Flintoff, 31, was disciplined for going on a drinking session in Belgium and missing a team bonding visit to the World War I trenches in Flanders.

The Sun quoted Strauss as saying: "He is very aware he stuffed up, he took it on the chin and apologised."

When asked about Flintoff's relationship with alcohol, Strauss appeared to acknowledge there is an issue.

He said: "That's something for him to answer, but something Fred has been working very hard on. He generally recognises when it is time to drink and time not to drink. It is important that he stays on the right side of that. I think he does the vast majority of the time."

It is at least Flintoff's fourth alcohol-related misdemeanour and England are concerned about the unsettling effect on team focus with the First Test against the Aussies beginning on July 8.

Pak govt holds PCB responsible for losing hosting rights of 2011 World Cup

Islamabad, July 1: The Pakistan government has blamed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the International Cricket Council's (ICC) decision to shift 2011 World Cup matches from the country.

Pointing fingers towards the PCB chief Ijaz Butt, Sports Minister Pir Aftab Jilani said those who run the matters of PCB are responsible for losing the rights of hosting World Cup 2011 matches.

"Of course, the one who is running the show of Pakistan cricket is responsible for this shift," The Daily Times quoted Jilani, as saying.

The ICC had decided not to host any World Cup matches in Pakistan following the brazen terrorist attack on the visiting Sri Lanka cricket team in Lahore in March.

Later, the apex cricket committee awarded all the 14 matches, which Pakistan had to host earlier, to the other three host nations India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Johnson looms as Australia's answer to Flintoff

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia's long search for a matchwinning all-rounder to counter the feats of England's Andrew Flintoff may finally be over.

Mitchell Johnson has not only established himself as the new leader of Australia's bowling attack but has also emerged as a devastating lower-order batsman.

His batting average of 34.70 and bowling average of 28.01 are both better than Flintoff's and the lanky Australian has reached the best form of his career heading into the Ashes.

Johnson took career-best figures of eight for 61 against South Africa in Perth in December then followed it up with his maiden test century against the same opponents in Cape Town in March.

Johnson's impressive statistics are only part of the reason why he is suddenly looming as Australia's trump card for the Ashes.

A naturally shy man, the 27-year-old Johnson has taken it upon himself to assume the role of the team's aggressor.

The ability to intimidate opposing batsmen is a vital weapon in the arsenal of any fast bowler and Johnson showed why he is one of the most fearsome pacemen in the world during one destructive day in Durban.

The left-hander captured three wickets, including two in his first over, with his blistering pace but also put two South African batsmen in hospital.

He broke a bone in the hand of Graeme Smith for the second time in two months with a delivery that leapt off the pitch and caught the South African skipper unaware.

STRAUSS TARGETTED

Then he split the chin of Jacques Kallis with a vicious bouncer that left South Africa's most experienced batsman dazed, bloodied and needing three stitches.

Johnson finished off by bowling Mark Boucher with an inswinging yorker that he has been working on in preparation for England.

The inability of Australia's pacemen to swing the ball played a part in their downfall in the 2005 Ashes series but Johnson's success has given them confidence that they will match the England seamers in that department this time.

As a left-armer himself he has unsurprisingly had a lot of success against left-handed batsmen and already has his sights set on England captain Andrew Strauss.

"Over in South Africa I started to swing the ball and (Strauss) being a left-handed batsman, it will go away from him," Johnson told the Australian Associated Press during a recent brief visit to his home in Perth.

"I like bowling to lefties so that's something that I'm looking forward to. It's going to be a great challenge and he's been scoring a few runs but hopefully we can put a bit of pressure on him and maybe their side will follow."

Johnson's rise to become Australia's premier fast bowler has been steady rather than meteoric.

He had been earmarked for greatness since he was a teenager but his progress was delayed by injuries and problems getting into an Australian side already packed with great pacemen.

He spent five seasons in Australia's first-class domestic competition before he was called into the national side for his first one-day international appearance against New Zealand in 2005, but took none for 64 from nine overs as the Kiwis overhauled Australia's total of 331-7 to win by two wickets.

EIGHT WICKETS

Johnson made another 17 one-day international appearances for Australia over the next 14 months and was picked for the 2007 World Cup in West Indies but did not play a match as Australia won the title for the third time in a row.

The retirement of Glenn McGrath opened the way for Johnson to push his claim for inclusion in the test side and he finally got his chance in November 2007 when he was selected to play against Sri Lanka in Brisbane aged 26.

He made a bright enough start, snaring eight wickets in the two-test series with Sri Lanka, then 16 and his first test half-century in the four-match series at home to India to cement his place in the side.

Johnson toured West Indies and India in 2008 but it was not until the most recent Australian summer that he really started to make his mark in the international arena.

He took nine for 36, including his first five-wicket haul in an innings against New Zealand, then claimed 33 wickets in six tests, three on home soil and three away, against the South Africans.

Batting at number eight, he had always been a consistent and valuable runscorer but as his confidence with the ball grew so too did his batting and he began turning his potential with the bat into higher scores.

He made 64 in Sydney, 96 not out in Johannesburg when he cruelly ran out of partners, then an unconquered 123 in Cape Town to make himself indispensable, though he remains uncomfortable about his sudden role as the spearhead of the attack.

"It has been something that I never thought I could handle but I've done okay out of it and I'm looking forward to the experienced guys of (Brett) Lee and (Stuart) Clark coming back in to show the way," he said.

"It's a pretty big event for me and my first time over in England for a while. I was there when I was 17 playing Australian 19s, but I'll be looking to feed off the experienced guys that have played county cricket over there."

Windies squad unchanged for last two ODIs

St. John's (Antigua, West Indies), June 30: The West Indies selectors have named an unchanged 13-man squad for the two final games of the four-match series against India, to be played at the Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia.

West Indies and India are levelled one all in the series. While India clinched a high-scoring thriller by 20 runs in the first ODI, the hosts stormed to an eight-wicket victory to draw level in the second. Both matches were played at Jamaica's Sabina Park.

The third ODI will be played on Friday while the fourth is scheduled for Sunday.

The squad is as follows: Chris Gayle (capt), Denesh Ramdin (wk), Lionel Baker, Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo, Sulieman Benn, David Bernard, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Runako Morton, Ravi Rampaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jerome Taylor.

Gayle to join Western Australia's T20 squad

West Indies captain Chris Gayle will join Western Australia for the domestic Twenty20 competition.

Gayle, who has questioned the future of test cricket amid the booming popularity of T20, will be Western Australia's international import for the tournament, coach Tom Moody announced Wednesday.

"Chris will provide a tremendous boost to the Warriors' Big Bash campaign, and having missed out on the opportunity to compete at the first Champions League Twenty20, we are determined to do all that we can to give ourselves a great chance of qualifying for the 2010 edition of the tournament," Moody said.

The top two Australian provinces qualify for the T20 Champions League, which will be launched in India later this year.

Western Australia signed the 29-year-old Gayle after failing to persuade former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist to come out of international retirement for the T20 squad. Gilchrist led Deccan to the Indian Premier League title this season.

The big hitting Gayle averages 41.27 in 12 T20 internationals and is among the leading exponents of the most condensed version of the international game.

His West Indies teammate Dwayne Bravo has signed to play for Victoria state.

ICC chief suggests four-day Tests, orange balls

The longest form of cricket may just get a bit shorter. In a bid to give it a makeover, the International Cricket Council is exploring the possibility of reducing Test cricket to four days, ICC president David Morgan said.

The suggestion comes in the wake of many other plans — such as two-tier format, segregating stronger teams from the weaker ones, and day-night matches — the apex body has come up with to revive the game's marquee form.

"Another thought that many people have, that we are examining is whether Test match cricket can be played over four days rather than five. I would be very surprised if within a year you haven't seen some significant changes in Test match cricket," Morgan said in an interview with India Today..

On the issue of the colour of the ball in day-night Test cricket, Morgan said it should be compatible with the traditional white clothing.

"We need better over-rates, better pitches that give a good balance between bat and ball and we need to consider day-night Test cricket.

"There is great support for it; the issue is the colour of the ball and the quality of the ball. It would be a pity if Test match cricket — day-night — had to be played with a white ball and therefore coloured clothing.

"We are looking very closely at ball manufacturing design that replicates a red ball, maybe an orange ball, a ball that could still allow us to play in white clothing and still at night," Morgan said.

Pathan to wed long-time girlfriend

India all-rounder Irfan Pathan said that he was all set to marry Shivangi Dev, the daughter of an Indian diplomat in Australia and his girlfriend of six years. "I am sure that I will marry Shivangi, but it will take another year-and-a-half," Pathan said. "It's a long cricketing season ahead and I want to focus on my cricket now."

Shivangi works as a chartered accountant in Australia and also teaches dance. Talk of their relationship had started when Irfan chose to stay back in Australia after India's last tour there. He subsequently proposed her in 2006. Subsequently, Shivangi made two trips to Irfan's Vadodara home.

The relationship had earlier been kept under wrap because of resistance from the two families. While Pathan's mother didn't comment on the wedding, Irfan's father, Mehboob Khan Pathan, said, "Jab miya biwi raazi, toh kya karega kaazi?" (If the bride and groom are ready to get married, what can one do?)

Vaughan is one of England's greats, says Flintoff

BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - Andrew Flintoff led the tributes after former England captain Michael Vaughan announced his retirement from cricket on Tuesday.

Yorkshire batsman Vaughan is England's most successful test skipper, with 26 wins from 51 matches.

"He was unflappable," said Flintoff on the eve of England's three-day practice game with Warwickshire. "There could be mayhem all around him and he would just stand there as if nothing was happening, whether the side was 500 for none or 90 for nine.

"He always looked pretty poker-faced," the all-rounder told reporters. "He gave confidence to his team ... he helped me as a player and he was a mate as well.

"He will go down as one of the greats of the English game."

Vaughan, 34, who scored 18 centuries in 82 tests, was captain at the time Kevin Pietersen came into England's one-day team in 2004 when the South African-born batsman had to return to his native country and confront a hostile crowd.

"Michael was huge for me," said Pietersen who hit three centuries in that one-day series.

JIBBERING WRECK

"One of the first things he said to me, when I came in at the Wanderers when 60,000 people looked as though they wanted to kill me, was `the ball's white, the ball's round and do whatever you have done to get here'.

"That calmed me right down from being a jibbering wreck when I walked on to that field to the player I am now. That's all I do now, I just watch the ball, not think about any rubbish," added England's leading batsman.

"Michael is a great leader of men and you learn a lot from guys like that."

Andrew Strauss, who will lead England in next week's first Ashes test against Australia in Cardiff, agreed Vaughan was a brilliant skipper.

"It's hard to speak highly enough about him as England captain," Strauss said. "He is the best captain I've played under, that goes for any form of cricket.

"His achievements can't be underestimated, the way he took the team forward, the relaxed way he was able to get us playing cricket.

"A lot of the stuff was behind the scenes, the way he dealt with players on a one-to-one basis was exceptional, and he cared," said Strauss.

"It's important to remember what a great player he was. It's a sad day."
